Detailed in the official release communication, Apple emphasizes that the latest update brings significant bug resolutions, security enhancements, and notably addresses an anomaly leading to unusually high temperatures in iPhones. The tech community awaits user feedback post this patch to gauge its effectiveness against the previously reported device heating issues.

One pivotal component of the iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 updates is the mitigation of a kernel vulnerability that could potentially provide malicious actors an avenue for elevated command executions.

In recent discussions, Apple pinpointed certain third-party app updates as contributors to the excessive heating problem. Apps like Instagram, Uber, and “Asphalt 9: Legends” were highlighted. Constructive collaborations between Apple and the said app developers are ongoing to iron out these issues. Notably, Instagram has acknowledged a bug causing device overheating and has scheduled an update set for today, 4th October.

Clarifying device behaviors, Apple shared, “Post initial setup or after a device reset, users may observe heightened heat due to extensive background operations. This is a transient state. We’ve recognized specific scenarios making iPhones run hotter than anticipated. Additionally, a certain bug in iOS 17 was impacting a section of our user base. This is slated for rectification in the latest software patch. Overloads caused by recent third-party app updates are also under scrutiny, and remedial measures are in progress.”

The highlighted bug is believed to be addressed with the introduction of the iOS 17.0.3 update.

Apple also took a moment to underline that the iPhone’s internal aluminum framework is not a factor in the overheating incidents reported by a segment of users.

Guide to Installing iOS and iPadOS Patches

For direct on-device updates:

  1. Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Prompt the update by selecting “Download and Install”. Post download, the system will auto-initiate the update.
  3. Ensure your device has a minimum of 50% battery or is connected to a charger.

In case the update doesn’t pop up instantly, be patient. The roll-out might be phased, meaning some users might get it slightly later.

Alternatively, for those who prefer wired updates, they can resort to iTunes on their Mac or PC (or the Mac Finder for more recent OS versions) and connect their device using a USB cable.
