iOS 16 has a new keyboard layout for iPhone. iOS 16 introduces support for the Dvorak keyboard layout for the iPhone. Users now have an alternative to the standard QWERTY layout. The new option was noticed back in July, but after that, talk about it subsided until the publications Ars Technica and The Verge remembered about it.

The Dvorak layout was created for faster and more ergonomic two-handed typing. The layout was patented by August Dvorak in 1936. When typing with it, the movement of the fingers is reduced due to the fact that the most frequently used letters (R, S, T, N, L) are located on the right, and the rest on the left. Since most people use their thumbs to type on a smartphone, the Dvorak layout is not as effective on the iPhone.
However, on an iPhone running iOS 16, Dvorak layout can be enabled in Settings under General > Keyboard > Keyboards > English > Dvorak. QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ layout options are also available. Dvorak layout is only available for English.
Prior to iOS 16, the Dvorak layout on iPhone could only be added using third-party keyboards available in the App Store, or by connecting an external keyboard. The Dvorak layout has long been supported on Macs and can be enabled via System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources. You need to click the plus icon and select the Dvorak option.
