iPhone 14: Why it’s really worth the wait?

iPhone 14: Why it’s really worth the wait? On September 7, 2022, Apple will introduce the iPhone 14 with features that we would have liked to see in the iPhone 13. So why is it worth the wait.

How to find out who can track your iPhone’s location

While the iPhone 13 is missing some features that would have been extremely useful and that Android users have known for a long time, Apple is bringing at least a few features with the iPhone 14 that are worth waiting for the new phone. Apple will present the iPhone 14 as early as September 7, 2022 – Apple revealed the date on August 24. What is particularly interesting is that the standard models differ more than before from the Pro versions.

iPhone 14 instead of notch with hole and pill

Anyone who sees the iPhone recognizes it immediately – because it has a particularly thick and conspicuous notch. Most current Android cell phones, on the other hand, use a punch-hole design that only leaves out the small front camera in the display. Some rumors are currently saying that Apple is actually removing the classic notch, at least on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, and is instead using a mixture of punch-hole and pill form for the front camera. The small circular recess should contain sensors for the Face ID and the selfie cam with other face recognition elements should be housed in the pill cutout.

Then the display cut-outs at the top of the screen seem to be very large. Manufacturers of Android cell phones, on the other hand, try to make the cut-out for the front camera as small and as unobtrusive as possible. The standard models of the iPhone 14, on the other hand, should continue to come with a notch. It would probably be a little smaller again compared to the notch in the iPhone 13.

iPhone 14 with a completely new design?

There were some rumors that the design could be new and partly reminiscent of an old Apple cell phone (iPhone 4). But that doesn’t seem to be the case now. Visually, the iPhone 14 generation will be very similar to the iPhone 13 series, although there are differences in the details. For example the front with the notch replacement. Rendering images of the iPhone 14 Pro based on CAD files show that the camera setup continues to protrude from the body. Even 0.7 millimeters wider than the iPhone 13 Pro. This can be explained with the camera update that the next iPhone will receive.

Lots of camera improvements: 48-megapixel, periscope, 8K videos

The iPhone models will not only differ in the notch design, but also in the camera. The two Pro models in particular will make a significant leap in terms of camera features and quality.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will probably be able to record videos in 8K, as is currently the case with Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series.

Apple should finally say goodbye to the 12-megapixel resolution in the Pro models and rely on 48 megapixels in the main camera with a larger image sensor, as reported by Macrumors, among others, who refer to the analyst Jeff Pu. In general, however, it is possible that the cameras will continue to take photos with 12 megapixels by default. As with many Android devices, Apple could use an algorithm that creates a 12-megapixel image with more light information from the 48-megapixel raw data. In this way, four pixels become one pixel, which at 2.5 micrometers would be significantly larger than the 1.7 micrometer pixels of the iPhone 13. As usual, the two standard models iPhone 14 and 14 Max should have a 12-megapixel be equipped with a camera.

120 Hertz display in every iPhone 14 model?

Apple is primarily lagging behind the competition in terms of the refresh rate of its displays, which has now not only reached 120 Hertz and sometimes even 144 Hertz in the flagship range, while the iPhones up to the iPhone 13 only offered 60 Hertz. After all, the current Pro models are now based on 120 Hertz, the smaller standard versions look in the tube.

Rumors have long persisted that by 2022 all four iPhone models would have a 120 Hertz ProMotion display. However, according to recent reports, that will not be the case.

iPhone 14 Pro with faster chip

Of course, the next iPhone generation will be faster again. In order to get significantly more performance than the iPhone 13 models, you have to use one of the two Pro models of the iPhone 14, because only they get the new A16 chip. The two standard models iPhone 14 and 14 Max will be equipped with the A15, which you are familiar with from the iPhone 14.

iPhone 13 without touch ID in the display – only in the iPhone 14?

Rumors persisted for a long time that Touch ID could also return with the iPhone 13 in the high-end segment – but this time not in the form of a physical button like the current iPhone SE 3 (in the test), but under the display glass , as you already know from Android phones like the current Galaxy S22 (all information).

There is no question that a fingerprint sensor is practical as an unlocking method in addition to facial recognition via Face ID in times of the pandemic. That’s why it was hoped until the end that Apple would bring back the Touch ID. It remains to be seen whether we will see a touch ID on the display of the iPhone 14. Because here the rumors are currently not unanimous. While there was talk a few months ago that the Touch ID should come, it is currently being said that Apple could probably only bring it in 2023.

iPhone 14 Max: The cheapest 6.7-inch iPhone yet?

After the iPhone 12 Mini and 13 Mini, the iPhone 14 should also be the end of the small version. One of the reasons should be the moderate success of the current mini-iPhone. Instead, according to the well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, we will see the following four models of the iPhone 14:

  • iPhone 14 (6.1 inch)
  • iPhone 14 Max (6.7 inch)
  • iPhone 14 Pro (6.1 inch)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7 inch)

No longer a mini, but a max model of the standard version. It could also mean that prices will drop with the iPhone 14 Max becoming the cheapest 6.7-inch iPhone in Apple history. He expects it to be under $900. At this point in time, we cannot say what the other prices are going to be like. However, we assume that this could also lower the price of the standard iPhone 14 model compared to the iPhone 13 and make it cheaper to get into the latest generation.

Assessment

The new features of the iPhone 13 compared to the current 12 models are not so huge that you definitely have to upgrade, as you can read in detail in our comparison. But with the iPhone 14 generation – if the features come like this – it looks a bit different. The wait is worth it, especially for the Pro models, because they will get the real highlights, the two standard models will be a very small update compared to the current iPhone devices. This should also lower the entry price, which will also be an important point for many buyers. Our euphoria would be even greater if 120 Hertz were integrated in all models and the fingerprint sensor in the display as a feature, but that is unlikely to be the case this year.

Overall, Apple is taking a new direction with the iPhone 14 generation and differentiating clearly and more than before between the Standard and Pro models. This also makes it easier to justify the higher price for a Pro device. But Apple’s strategy could actually pay off. Because that’s where the iPhone 14 Max comes in. Even though it shares the same processor and design as the iPhone 13, the 14 Max is a new addition to Apple’s entry-level models and will make the lack of other features much easier to cope with. And it also serves as an entry point into the Pro range, if not with the iPhone 14 then with the 15 or 16.

Note

  • Of course we have to keep in mind that the iPhone 14 has not yet been finally presented and this article is based on rumors – which, however, sound very plausible and the closer we get to the keynote, the more specific they become.
