iPhone 15 Pro will integrate an even more advanced LiDAR scanner

iPhone 15 Pro will integrate an even more advanced LiDAR scanner. Sony has been chosen as the supplier of the sensor that will be integrated into the LiDAR scanner of the future iPhone 15 Pro.

Apple plans two AR headsets for 2025

This was reported by the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo explaining that Sony is the supplier that will replace Lumentum and WIN Semi, companies that currently offer the sensor exclusively to Apple.

Kuo points out that the Japanese company’s Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting (VCSEL) laser boasts lower power consumption than that offered by Apple’s current suppliers, which will allow the iPhone 15 Pro LiDAR scanner to guarantee greater energy efficiency and consequent improvements in battery life.

Other peculiarities of the LiDAR scanner should also benefit the camera for features such as night mode (to take pictures when the camera detects a dimly lit environment), but also in the context of Augmented Reality.

The LiDAR scanner arrived with the iPhone 12 Pro in 2020 and is used, for example, to measure the distance of light and use information about the depth of pixels in a scene. The technology in question also makes possible better augmented reality experiences. Among the possibilities offered by LiDAR, that of instantaneously measuring the height of a person from the ground to the top of the head, hair or hat he is wearing.

The LiDAR should remain exclusive to the Pro line models.
