ios 14 beta

You do not need to install iOS 14 beta on your iPhone

The week after iOS 14 beta was first announced at WWDC, I struggled with the desire to try the new firmware version in action. As often happens, curiosity prevailed, all the more it was necessary to put a beta at least in order to talk about its main features on our website. The first couple of days I was genuinely surprised how fast and cool everything worked – there was even the thought that this was not a beta, but almost a release version of iOS 14. However, the problems started only later.

iOS 14 beta issues

It began with the fact that it became impossible to use Yandex.Navigator, Google maps, and in general many services to which map services are connected. Many readers in our Telegram chat will understand me, because a bug with the maps of many forced me to return to iOS 13 almost immediately. Its essence is that it is impossible to move around the map – the application immediately recognizes the increased pressure and offers to select the end point of the route.

I decided to wait a few days, believing that the developers of Yandex.Navigator would fix the problem (they also install beta for themselves). However, there was no update for 3 weeks. IOS 14 beta 2 already managed to be released, where at first, as it seemed to me, the bug really disappeared. However, after rebooting the iPhone, everything returned. Moreover, it was the second beta that forced me to return to iOS 13.

Firstly, almost no one could reach me. Fortunately, this is the era of messengers, and you can contact differently, but if, for example, a courier calls, this is terribly inconvenient. At first I didn’t understand why all of a sudden they began to write SMS, and then they told me that when making a call after the first beeps, it immediately resets. There was no Do Not Disturb mode, restarting the iPhone did not help either. Out of 5 subscribers, only one could get through. Why then do I need a phone?

Bugs iOS 14 beta

However, this bug does not compare with what happened last weekend. I went far from home and used the iPhone as usual, and after a few hours I saw the message “Update the software to continue using the iPhone” on the screen. The nearest Wi-Fi point was far away, and I was confused because the entire network on the phone was gone. You could not even go to the messenger or the Apple support forum. The good old reboot eventually solved the problem, but later this bug appeared several more times. This is terribly annoying, because because of this, literally you are left without communication.

Well, the “cherry on the cake” was the problem of compatibility with banking applications. I could not find out the balance on the card in two programs at once.

Obviously, application developers have nothing to do with it, and they will do iOS 14 support later, but how to use these products now? This was the last straw, I decided to roll back from iOS 14 to iOS 13.

Fortunately, there was a backup copy on the computer that I made in advance (the copy in iCloud was already with iOS 14), so I downloaded the current iOS 13 firmware, installed it and then decided to recover from the backup according to our instructions. However, the recovery failed, I tried to change the cable – all to no avail. After the computer issued an error indicating that the backup was damaged, it became clear that the data could not be returned. This is iTunes, there is always, unfortunately, a lottery.

Is it worth it to install iOS 14 Beta

In general, I had to restore the iPhone “like new”. No applications, only iCloud authorization to load contacts, photos and other information that is needed. As a result, I installed about 30 applications and realized that this is enough for my daily tasks. The only plus – I came to an important conclusion for myself: I do not need to have ten, 100 or 300 applications on the iPhone. It is enough to leave on your smartphone the programs that I use once a day, week or month. In an extreme case, you can download this or that application, and then immediately delete it. This way you can avoid the accumulation of excess “garbage” in the form of unused programs.

However, my approach is definitely not suitable for everyone, and it is unlikely that an ordinary user will be delighted that he lost all the information on his iPhone. Therefore, I would strongly recommend not installing iOS 14 beta, at least on the main iPhone.

If you have a device “for experimentation” – please. But be very careful. Yes, many in the comments will write that they have “everything works well,” and this may be true – it all depends on the iPhone model and many other factors. However, everything was more or less normal at first too. Once again I’m not ready to take risks.
