Front-facing camera, new for iPhone 14 Pro repairs. Apple is making a major change to the repair process for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Starting this week, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers can repair Face ID and TrueDepth system problems without having to replace the entire iPhone.

The TrueDepth camera module consists of all components for Face ID and the front camera. It is an essential component for the functionality of the iPhone and therefore, if it does not work, it must be fixed as soon as possible.
For years, if an iPhone’s Face ID or front-facing camera failed, the user had to replace the entire device, as Apple had no way to do same-unit repairs for the TrueDepth module. That changed last year when Apple began fixing iPhones for TrueDepth module issues on iPhone XS and later.
However, when a new iPhone is launched, it usually takes several months for Apple to optimize its support channels and perform certain repairs. When the iPhone 14 range debuted last fall, for example, Apple was still unable to perform repairs for the TrueDepth Camera on the unit.
In a note sent to employees today, Apple announced that repairs on the same unit it serviced are now available for the TrueDepth camera module on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This means that if Face ID or a other part of the TruthDepth module has problems, Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers can now replace just that component rather than the entire device.
Depending on the exact problem and other issues the iPhone may have, however, repair on the same device is not always guaranteed. Apple says employees should always follow the guidance provided by the Apple Service Toolkit 2 diagnostic system.
The same-drive repair option for the TrueDepth camera isn’t currently available for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Apple says it will let its teams know at a later date when it becomes available.
The company describes repairs of the same unit as “the best way to contribute to Apple’s ongoing work to give our products a longer life.”
