This revelation, originally hinted at by Jeff Pu of International Securities and recently gaining traction on social media platforms like Weibo, now seems more concrete with Kuo’s endorsement.
Critical Bug Leads to Apple Pulling iOS 17.3 Beta 2, Affecting iPhone Users
The upgrade is particularly significant for the ultra-wide lens, which currently utilizes a 12 MP sensor. In the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, expected in the autumn of the current year, this lens is set to see its resolution quadrupled. Such an enhancement would mean a substantial increase in light capture capability, greatly improving photo quality in low-light conditions, especially with the 0.5x zoom.
These advancements would allow the next Pro models to capture images in ProRAW format not only with the main camera – a feature already available from the iPhone 14 Pro and extended across the iPhone 15 range – but also with the ultra-wide angle. This offers users more versatility in editing, including for large-size print purposes.
Additionally, similar to the current main 48 MP camera, the new ultra-wide angle is expected to feature pixel-binning technology. This technique merges data from multiple pixels to create “super pixels,” enhancing overall image quality.
Telephoto Lens Upgrades on the Horizon
While the telephoto lens might initially remain with a 12 MP sensor, upgrades are on the horizon. Kuo suggests that the tetraprism system, currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, might be incorporated into the iPhone 16 Pro. This would increase the lens’s focal length. By 2025, with the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple plans to complete the transition to 48 MP sensors for all lenses, including the telephoto.
Front Camera Improvements
The iPhone 17 Pro is also rumored to see a significant upgrade in the front camera, potentially doubling its sensor resolution to 24 MP and incorporating a 6-element lens. This anticipated enhancement, however, brings with it the risk of the Osborne Effect, where potential buyers might defer purchasing the iPhone 16 Pro in anticipation of the more advanced camera systems in the following model.
