watchOS9, now the Compass offers stages and Retrace your steps. During the Far Out presentation on Wednesday 7 September, Apple unveiled the first Apple Watch Ultra with a new Compass app, improved both for design and interface and for the functions offered: the excellent news is that thanks to watchOS 9 this new Compass is now available to all owners of other Apple Watch models, starting with the Series 5 range and newer.

Safari 16 supports AVIF images, Passkey and has lots of news for developers

Of course, some features require sensors and hardware installed on board, so some of the new features are only available on Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch Se and later. The redesigned Compass app displays the graphics of the dial of an analog compass on the screen, including current position and direction.

By rotating the Digital Corina, the user can access an enlarged view that shows more details, including position, altitude, inclination, latitude and longitude for more information.

Users who own Apple Watch Series 6 or newer can mark points of interest with the new waypoint function, which stores coordinates by providing customized symbols and colors. By marking the coordinates of waypoints and points of interest along the route, the waypoints are all shown in the Compass, making it easier to retrace your steps and the marked waypoints.

Interesting and useful is the new Backtrack function of the watchOS 9 Compass, literally the path of return, in Italian Back on your steps, also available only for Apple Watch Series 6 or later. The smartwatch uses GPS to record the path followed by the user: if you get lost, simply activate the retrace your steps function to find your way back.

In the past few hours, Apple has released the definitive versions for all of iOS 16 for iPhone, watchOS 9 and even tvOS 16.
