Which camera lenses does the iPhone 14 Pro have
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have a camera system consisting of three lenses:
- 13mm (0.5x) ultra wide-angle lens;
- Main lens 24mm (1x) no zoom;
- Main lens 48mm 2x zoom (2x);
- 77mm telephoto lens with 3x zoom (3x);
Apple first introduced the 2x lens in 2016 with the iPhone 7 Plus. Camera magnification increased to 2.5x with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and then to 3x with the release of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
While the 2.5x and 3x lenses had good optical zoom, there was a compromise that Apple had to make – the camera lost 2x optical zoom; when shooting in the range from 1x to 2.5x/3x, only digital zoom with its lower quality could be used.
This was especially noticeable with last year’s 3x telephoto lens. A large optical zoom on the iPhone is of course necessary, but a 2x optical zoom is also necessary.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max address this trade-off effectively. The trick is that when using the newly introduced 48-megapixel sensor, 2x cropping is performed and the image is obtained as with a standard 12-megapixel sensor. This works very well, and the larger lens lets in more light than any iPhone 2x-3x lens to date.
